Groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) – Habitats under pressure?

Brief synopsis of the session:
GDEs like springs, the hyporheic zone or caves are important ecotones which are wide-ranging interacting with aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Groundwater provides water, nutrients and mostly stable temperature. However, the role of groundwater in surface ecosystems is not fully understood and global change impacts are complex and not trivial to predict. Protection, development and revitalization of GDEs and their ecological functions are of crucial importance. Disturbances to the groundwater regime result in a range of threats, including warming of water temperature, salinization, pollution, eutrophication and land use changes. The session should demonstrate current knowledge and progress on topics to stimulate ongoing discussion, debate and learning, highlight areas for further work, and improve general knowledge and understanding about impacts on GDEs.
